The typical classical / nylon string guitar fingerboard is flat. However, this is not the only option.

Some classical guitarists like a slight curve across the fingerboard as it helps them with barre / bar chords. Some top flight luthiers even make fingerboards with a slight curve without even announcing the fact! It is not only professionally trained classical guitarists who appreciate some help with their bar chords when playing pieces from the classical repertoire. Then there are guitarists coming from a steel string/electric guitar background who take a curved fingerboard for granted.

The curve on the fingerboard can be slight or more pronounced. It is usually measured as the radius of the circle of which the fingerboard at the 12th fret is an arc. Hence the term “Radiused Fingerboard”.

Hanika offers the following options

  • Conventional flat fingerboard – this is standard on all models
  • A gentle curve – measured as a 30 inch radius
  • A more pronounced curve – measured as an 18inch radius, and
  • A very noticeable curve – measured as a 12inch radius.

It is important to note that any given radius produces a more pronounced curve on narrower fingerboards. A 30 inch radius on a neck / fingerboard with a 52mm width at the nut is very gentle, only just noticeable, while the same radius on a neck with a 48mm width is quite pronounced. A 12 inch radius is quite pronounced on a neck with 52mm nut width while it is approaching the feel of an electric solid body guitar when combined with a 48mm neck-nut width.

Hanika will fit pickups to all the guitars in the range, either as part of a custom order or else after sale.

There are four pickups that are recommended

  • Udo Rosner Dot – Extremely natural sounding under saddle transducer with in-soundhole volume control. Udo Rosner was the designer and driving force behind AER before going independent
  • Udo Rosner Hash – as the “Dot” but adding an internal microphone and a microphone blend control to the in-soundhole control
  • Shadow NFX-MSC-V -high quality under saddle Nanoflex transducer with in-soundhole volume control.
  • ShadowSH-4020-C -Six independent Nanoflex pickups, one for each string, with side mounted controls giving extensive control over the level/gain of each string as well as Pan, EQ and Phase controls. It also has a built in tuner . Armin Hanika was a consultant to Shadow when they developed this system and the prototypes were tuned and regulated on a Hanika guitar.

If you have another pickup system that you would like fitted, please ask – it is usually possible.

The picture shows the controls for an Udo Rosner Hash pickup mounted inside the soundhole. Mounting in this way means that you don’t have to cut chunks of tonewood out of the side of the guitar to accommodate the electronics.

(The BasisCut PC in the picture has a rosewood rather than an ebony fingerboard).
